“It’s nice to meet you, Ava, I’m Dr. Miller.”
She gripped my arm and pulled me closer to her.
“Ow! Hey, what are you doing?”
Before I could rip my arm away, I felt the sharp prick of a needle. She let go of my hand and the world around me started to become dark.
“What the hell have you done?”
Dr. Miller gave me an evil smile.
“The question isn’t what have I done, it’s what have you done?”
I slowly sank to the floor and I was encased in darkness.

Grady
I looked at the cell phone again, and there was still no response from her. Fuck. It had been over a half hour and she was still silent. Something had to be wrong. My bear growled underneath the surface.
I texted Sarge to let him know I had the phone, and that Ava was not back yet.
Keep your cool, Grady. Give it a few more minutes.
I gripped the cell phone tightly and stopped myself before I flung it across the cell. It was my only form of communication. I walked up to the bars and looked down the corridor. It was eerily silent. All of a sudden, the silence was broken by an ear-piercing scream. A scream that I easily recognized.
Ava.
I grabbed the phone and quickly texted Sarge.
I just heard Ava scream. Get ready outside. I’m going to save her.
I shoved my phone back in my pant pocket and ignored the buzzing that came afterward. Sarge was going to be pissed that I just went after her, but I would not stand by and let her be hurt. That was her scream and I would do anything to protect her. Even compromise this mission.
I pushed open my cell door and held my gun out in front of me. It felt good to have a gun back in my hands. I felt my bear stir beneath my skin, and I smiled, knowing that whatever they had stuck me with before had worn off. I would be able to shift if I needed to. I cautiously walked down the corridor to where I heard her scream come from. I reached the end of the hall and I slowly peeked around the turn. Another one of Ava’s screams broke the silence, and I rushed down the empty hallway. They had her in the testing lab.
I reached the lab’s double doors and looked inside through the window. Ava was strapped to the table. She had an IV in her arm and that sadistic redheaded doctor had her hand over her mouth. There were two guards and another woman in the lab with her. I dropped below the window and formulated a plan. I would need to take out the two guards first, grab one of their guns, and then aim at both the doctor and the other woman.
I looked back up to the window and waited until the guards had their backs to me. I took a deep breath and burst into the lab. The guard spun around, but I was too quick for them. I took the first one out with a shot to his chest, and the second one with a shot to his head. The other woman screamed while the doctor just stared at me.
I pointed my gun at the doctor as I walked over to the guard and grabbed his gun with my left hand. I stood up and pointed both guns at them.
“Let Ava go,” I growled. The doctor walked around Ava and I tracked her movements.
“Well, well, Subject 25063-9. So nice of you to join us. I believe you go by Grady though, correct?”
I stared at her in silence. I didn’t give a shit about what she was about to tell me. I just needed to get Ava out of here. The doctor realized I wasn’t going to speak, so she continued.
“We know your girl Ava pretty well. You see, we’ve been tracking her movements for quite some time.”
My heart beat faster in my chest. Purest figured out she was helping me. “Leave Ava out of this. She is human.”
“You’re right, she is. But now that she has slept with you, we will be able to use her baby for testing.”
The blood drained from my face. Ava was pregnant? How was that possible?
“We never slept together. There is no way she could be pregnant,” I lied.
The doctor walked toward me and smiled. “Oh, you are so naïve. It makes me wonder if your shifter brain is not as intelligent as my human one. Do you really think that we would not have security cameras everywhere? They’re in the labs, and they’re in the cells.”
Fuck. They must have been hidden. Did that mean that they knew about the bomb?
“And now that we know that you two had gotten it on, we wanted to make sure that your sperm landed home.”
I let out a loud growl. My bear was itching to get out and rip out this redhead’s throat. I took a deep breath to calm my nerves. The doctor let out a laugh and walked back over to Ava’s side. Ava looked up with me with tear-stained eyes.
The woman to my right moved and I immediately shot her in the leg. She wailed and fell to the ground. I dropped the guard’s gun and used both my hands to steady my aim on the doctor.
“Let Ava go, and I won’t shoot you.”
The doctor let out another laugh. “There is no stopping us. You realize that, don’t you? No matter how hard you try, we will always be here.” She grabbed Ava’s arm and injected her with something.
My anger boiled over, and all I saw was red. I pulled the trigger and shot her directly in the forehead. Ava let out a whimper and passed out. I lowered my gun and rushed to her side.
“Ava! Ava, please wake up.” I yanked the IV out of her arm and checked her pulse. It was steady and she looked like she was breathing normally. I needed to get her out of here, and fast. I scooped her up quickly and smiled when I felt the remote detonator still in her pant pocket. I hoped that no one had found the bomb, but I couldn’t worry about that now. I needed to get Ava to safety.
I kicked open the doors of the lab and carried her outside. Noticing the area was completely empty, I ran down the hallway and let out a sigh of relief when I noticed an exit sign. I reached the door and carefully laid Ava on the ground. I slowly pushed it open. I was met with deep purple eyes staring at me, with a gun pointed to my face.
“Sarge!”
“Jesus, kid. You scared the hell out of us. We were about to break in to get you out.”
“We need to get Ava help. They took her and gave her something.” I went back inside and picked her up. Sarge called out on his walkie talkie.
“We need that bus here now!”
I looked down at Ava’s face and let out a sigh when I knew she would be safe. Sarge would make sure of that. Now I needed to take care of these fuckers, and save the rest of the shifters in the cages. It was what she would have wanted me to do.
“Sarge, take her. I have to let the rest of the shifters out. The detonator is in her pocket. If I’m not out in ten minutes, set it off.”
Sarge gave me a stern look. “They have cameras everywhere, Sarge, so we don’t have much time. They probably know I’m standing out here right now.”
Sarge nodded and took off running, with Ava in his arms. I hated that she was being taken away from me, but I knew that it was the only way to get her help. I felt tension build up in my muscles. I turned back around and ran into the building. I needed to finish what I came here to do.

Ava
I slowly opened my eyes. I felt a soft sheet underneath me. I quickly looked around and realized that I was on a stretcher being carted to an ambulance. I tried to sit up, but strong arms pushed me down.
“Ava, relax, you’re safe.” I looked up and recognized Sarge’s deep purple eyes.
“Where’s Grady?”
Sarge looked behind him and I followed his line of sight. We were just outside of the Purest facility. We were hidden by a cover of trees in the woods.
“He’s still in there? I have to help him!”
“No, you don’t, Ava, he’s fine. He will be out in a few minutes.” Sarge looked at the EMTs and nodded. No, they would not take me away from here without Grady. I forced myself up and jumped off the stretcher. The EMTs tried to grab me, but I was able to maneuver away from them. I started walking toward the facility when I felt a strong grip on my wrist. I turned around and faced Sarge’s strong stare.<

“I won’t leave here without him.”
A look of understanding crossed Sarge’s face. “You’re his mate, aren’t you?” I never really thought about that term until now. Was I his mate? I loved Grady with all of my heart. I had never met anyone like him before. I looked up at Sarge and slowly nodded yes.
Warmth filled his purple eyes and he smiled at me.
“You can stay, but the second this is over, the EMT’s are going to take you to the hospital. Or if you feel any pain or sickness, you’re leaving immediately.” I nodded.
Suddenly, a loud alarm blasted from the facility. A set of double doors was pushed open and hundreds of animals and people rushed out. The cages. Grady must have gone back to get everyone out. The stampede rushed by us and I desperately searched for Grady. Where the hell was he? My mouth fell open when I saw exactly how many shifters were contained at the facility. Those that were injured from testing were being carried by others.
I ran through the crowd and called out Grady’s name. I reached into my pocket and felt for the detonator. My heart fell down to my stomach. It was gone. I looked over to my right and saw Sarge standing with Harrison. I rushed over to him.
“Sarge, the bomb! I no longer have the detonator.”
Sarge held up the small device in his hand. Oh, thank God. Purest hadn’t taken it. We could still destroy all of their research.
The crowd of animals and people lessened and there was still no sign of Grady. I looked at Sarge with concern. He had to make it out.
“Grady wanted me to set it off if he wasn’t back outside in ten minutes,” Sarge said gravely.
“How long has it been?” I asked, afraid to know the answer.
Sarge looked down at his watch. “Nine.”
Come on, Grady, I thought. Get out of there. I held my breath as Sarge continued to check his watch. Suddenly, the double doors burst open, and two figures came rushing out of the building. I ran forward and almost wept when I saw that it was Grady. In his arms was a young boy that couldn’t have been more than ten years old.
“Sarge, Grady’s out! Do it!”
Sarge pressed the button and I held my breath in anticipation. Please, God, let this work. Suddenly, there was a loud explosion on the second level of the building. Fire shot out of the windows and engulfed the whole floor in flames.
Grady rushed through the tree-line and placed the young boy on the ground. I rushed over to him and jumped into his arms.
His lips crashed into mine and I felt my body completely melt into his. He broke our kiss and he looked down into my eyes. I was still amazed how his bright blue eyes captivated me.
“I’m so glad you’re all right.”
I let out a laugh. “Me too.”

“Purest, Inc. was burned down in a massive fire yesterday. Witnesses claim that the fire was started as an explosion in one of their laboratories, and the fire engulfed the rest of the building. Firefighters worked tirelessly for hours to put out the flames, but due to all of the chemicals in the building, the fire was too large for them to contain. The whole facility has been destroyed and it is not pending a investigation.”
There were cheers around me at the bar as our unit watched the news report. I pulled Ava closer to me on my lap and gently kissed her neck. Sarge cleared his throat and raised his glass.
“To the end of Purest!”
Everyone smiled and clinked their glasses together. The unit had been celebrating for hours since we heard that Purest was completely destroyed.
After I had gotten out, I took Ava to the hospital. She fought me and said that she was completely fine, but I had to make sure. The doctors had run several tests and they all confirmed that she was in fact pregnant, but there was no damage that was done to her or our baby.
Wow, our baby. I still hadn’t gotten used to that term. A younger version of me would have hated it, but now, with Ava sitting on my lap, I absolutely loved it. Ava was my mate, and she was going to eventually have my child. I couldn’t have been happier.
Ava leaned back toward me and whispered in my ear.
“I know we destroyed everything, but what if they have other labs?” It was a thought that I did not want to think about.
“If they do, then we have enough witnesses to go to trial now. With all of those shifters escaping, there is no way that Purest will be able to throw out every one of their trials. Especially when we let the media know about what they were really doing there.”
She let out a long sigh.
“Don’t worry, Ava, I will always protect you.” I rubbed my hand over her belly. “And our child. You will never have to live in fear of Purest.” I wrapped my arms tighter around her.
I leaned into her ear and whispered, “I love you.”
“I know.” She turned around and pressed her lips gently to mine.
