Undercover Bear: Gavin (BBW Paranormal Bear Shifter Romance) Page 7
“Gavin, is everything all right? Did they bring whipped cream?” Tasha giggled from the top of the stairs, but immediately stopped when she saw Harrison. “What’s wrong?” She pulled her robe tightly across her chest.
“I’ll be up in a minute.” I tried to smile. “Police business. And slight delay on the dinner delivery.”
She hesitated.
“I’ll be right up. Promise.”
She turned from the staircase and I glared at Harrison. “How am I supposed to tell her this? We put her through hell today. She’s been going through hell for the past two weeks, waiting for today. And now what? We keep running?”
“I’ll get to the bottom of it. I swear. But what I know is it isn’t safe for her here, and after what you told me today, that means you’re going with her.”
“Damn right I am. She’s my mate.”
“Then take her and get as far from Seattle as you can.” Harrison’s hand landed on the door knob. “Good luck, Gavin.”
“Thanks, man.”
The door closed and I locked it. What in the hell were we going to do now?

Tasha’s robe was on the floor, and she was under the covers when I walked into the suite. Her eyes were closed.
“Tash?” I whispered, but she breathed lightly and the sheet fell from her shoulder, exposing the pinkness of her breasts.
I sat next to her, stroking her hair, watching my beautiful mate sleep. She had been through hell today. Tonight, I’d let her sleep, and in the morning, we’d find a way out of this nightmare together.
I pulled the T-shirt over my head and shrugged the jeans from my legs before climbing in bed with her. She nuzzled into my chest.
“I love you, Gavin,” she whispered.
My heart twisted in my chest. I kissed her forehead. “I love you too, tiger.”

I stretched my arms overhead. I couldn’t believe it was finally over. I didn’t mean to fall asleep before dinner arrived last night, but after hours in the courtroom and then the round of orgasms Gavin gave me, sleep was natural.
The covers next to me were flat. My bear must have gotten up early. I picked up the robe from the floor and covered my body before walking to the bathroom. It was bigger than most living rooms.
I noticed the suitcases by the door. Gavin popped his head in the door.
“You’re up.”
“Good morning.” I smiled. “I’ll be right out.” I closed the door behind me.
When I emerged, he was sitting on the bed. I noticed his gun holstered on his chest.
“Something’s wrong.” The smile fell from my face.
“Sit.” He patted the bed next to him.
“Oh, God. What’s wrong? What happened?”
He put an arm around me. “There’s no good way to tell you this. The grand jury didn’t indict.”
I shoved away from him. “No. That’s not possible. They heard my testimony. No. No. They heard what happened to me. They saw the pictures. They know.” The tears stung the corners of my eyes.
“I know. I know you’re angry. I’m angry. Harrison’s pissed. Something is obviously wrong. Purest must have someone on the jury or someone on the inside.”
I buried my face in my hands as the sobs wracked my body. All this time, I had kept the tears away. I hadn’t let myself cry, but this was too much. The tears streamed into my palms.
Gavin held me close to him. “It’s okay. I’ve got you. I’m not letting anything happen to you.”
I sniffed, feeling the defeat sink into my shoulders. “The testimony. All those hours,” I cried.
“I know. It sucks.” He kissed the top of my head. “But we have to get going.”
“Going?” I looked up through blurry eyes.
“The second part of the bad news is we have to leave.”
“And where are we going this time?” I wiped my wet cheeks with my palms, knowing I looked like a complete mess in front of my mate.
“That’s kind of the cool part. We can go anywhere we want.”
I didn’t understand what he was saying. “We’re not going to a safe house?”
He shook his head. “I’m your safe house now.”
“Wait, because the grand jury didn’t indict, I don’t have police protection anymore, do I?” I waited for his answer.
“You have my protection, and that’s all you need. We’re going to start over somewhere. And when it’s safe to come back to Seattle, we’ll come back if we want to.”
“This is unreal. What about your job? You can’t just stop being a detective.” This couldn’t be happening.
He cupped my face between his hands. “I don’t give a damn about my job. You are my life, Tasha. And if we have to get out of Seattle, then that’s what we’re doing.”
“I can’t ask you to give up your life here. Your career. Your sister. No, it’s too much.” I shook my head.
He chuckled. “First, you wanted to convince me to take you as a mate, and now you’re trying to convince me to turn that side of me off.”
I glared at him. “There is nothing funny about this.”
“It’s funny if you think for one second that we’re splitting up. This is forever, babe. You are mine. Mine,” he growled.
I bit my lower lip, feeling how my body responded to his possessiveness. He wasn’t kidding. When I let him claim me, I gave him reign over my body, and right now, I wanted him just as badly.
I loosened the tie on my robe, letting it slide from my shoulders.
His mouth covered mine, sucking hard against my tongue. “We don’t have time for this.”
My hand reached between his legs, feeling how hard he already was. I smiled. “We always have time for this.”
* * *
Gavin had traded his Jeep in this morning for a small car with Ohio plates. There was enough room for our bags in the trunk, but not much else. One tank of gas would get us out of Washington. And where we were going to go from there, we didn’t know.
I looked down at our hands. His hands were large and strong, but his fingers twined through mine with the perfect fit.
His sunglasses blocked his eyes.
I sighed and he looked over at me. “Have you picked a place on the map yet?” he asked.
“I’m thinking we should head south.”
“Which south?”
“What about the Keys?”
He pulled his shades down. “A bear and tiger in the tropics?”
I shrugged. “I’ve never been. We should at least try it.”
His brow furrowed the way it did when he was considering something. I might have convinced him.
“All right. We can try it.”
“Really?” I smiled. I’d never been far from Seattle. My uncle’s grasp on me was tight.
“Living with you in a tiki hut on the beach sounds perfect. Especially if you wear one of those coconut bras every day.”
I laughed. “If you can compromise on the islands, then yes, I’ll throw in a coconut bra every once in a while.”
His hand moved to my knee. “God, I’m so in love with you, Tash.”
I looked at this man who had held me, loved me, taken me with total abandon. And I knew I’d rather spend a life on the run with him than a life safe at home without him. He was my world. And whatever life we had together would be ours.
“So, would this be a good time to talk about kids?” I grinned.
“Why?”
“We haven’t really talked about it. Are they going to be bears or tigers?”
He tilted his head. “I guess they could be either.”
“I never wanted children before.”
“You didn’t?”
How could I explain to him the loss I felt by not knowing any other tiger shifters? I didn’t know how to be a shifter mom. But the instant I let Gavin into my bed, I wanted to give him a family. I wanted his children.
“No, but you’ve changed all that. I want your c
hildren. Your cubs, our cubs. Whatever little shifters we make together.” I smiled. “Isn’t that crazy?”
He laughed. “It is crazy. But I love it too.”
I leaned my head back. We didn’t know if Purest was looking for me or not. I should be scared. I should be worried for my life, not planning when I was going to get pregnant, but Gavin made me want to live. He made me want to love. He gave me the gift of trust.
“What are you doing over there?” he asked.
“Oh, I was calculating how many days it’ll take us to get to the Keys, and how many nights we need to stay in hotels.”
“Really?”
“Mmhmm. I think it’s going to be six days, five nights.” I looked at him wickedly.
“You know I want to pull this car over right now?”
I nodded. “I know you do. But we’ve got to drive, right?”
“Right.”
I laughed, somehow, in the face of danger. In leaving our lives behind, we had found each other. We had found love. And we had a future together. As long as I was with Gavin, I would always have my safe house.
